Our winery in the terraces of the Wachau

We have been growing wine here in the small winegrowing village of Joching – which belongs to Weißenkirchen, the largest winegrowing community in the Wachau – for generations: uncompromisingly quality-oriented and in harmony with nature.

We cultivate seven hectares of vineyards in the Buschenberg, Vorderseiber, Ritzling, Stein am Rain, Pichl Point, Kollmitz, Jochinger Berg, Gaisberg, Marienfeld and Hochrain vineyards.

The grape varieties grown for white wines are Grüner Veltliner (55%), Riesling (28%), Pinot Blanc (2%), Müller Thurgau (2%), Gelber Muskateller (8%), Sauvignon Blanc (4%) and Blauer Zweigelt (1%) for red wines.

The different soils and microclimates of the individual vineyards give the wines their taste and character.

Our carefully harvested grapes are gently pressed, fermented under controlled conditions and filtered after the natural end of fermentation. They are then allowed to mature in our centuries-old wine cellar until they are bottled.

We are a member of Vinea Wachau, an association of Wachau winegrowers who harvest and press their wines exclusively in the Wachau. The Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd brands stand for naturalness, assured origin and strict self-control.

Modern technology in the historic wine cellar

Four meters below the surface, centuries old and made of clay bricks: In our vaulted cellar, our wines mature and are stored at a constant 12 °C and optimum humidity.

After careful modernization and expansion over the last few years, our traditional wooden barrel cellar has been transformed into an unchanged, atmospheric, contemporary wine cellar with stainless steel tanks.

We still use one remaining wooden barrel for our red wines: they are stored in it for at least a year to develop their flavor.

The cellar was built during the reign of Maria Theresa. Our research has shown that it belonged to the monastery of St. Nikola ob Passau, which no longer exists and which ran a reading yard in Joching.

We cordially invite you to experience wine where it is made. You are welcome to visit the modern cellar technology in our historic vaulted cellar by appointment or during your next farm-gate shopping trip.
